General-Purpose AI (GPAI)

General-Purpose AI, or GPAI, refers to AI models that are capable of performing a wide range of tasks and can be integrated into many different systems or applications.

Unlike an AI system designed for one narrow purpose, a general-purpose model may support writing, coding, analysis, image generation, research, or many other uses.

Under the EU AI Act, providers of general-purpose AI models are subject to specific obligations, with additional requirements applying to certain models that may create systemic risk.

Organizations using GPAI should also consider how the model is incorporated into downstream systems, what data it receives, and what business decisions or actions depend on its output.
