2024 has not seen nearly as high profile GDPR fines as 2023 saw, but the Netherlands DPA is course-correcting that after issuing a nine-figure and eight-figure fine to American companies Uber and Clearview AI last week.

The $324 million fine handed to Uber becomes the largest GDPR fine of 2024. The issue of noncompliance boils down to the carshare giant illegally transferring personal details of European drivers to the United States without adequate data protection. Uber plans to fight the violation, although past violations of this financial magnitude have usually reached smaller--but still notable--settlements.

Just a few days ago the Dutch DPA struck again, this time hitting Clearview AI with a nearly $34 million fine over its noncompliant collection and retention of an extensive database of facial images. The DPA alleges that Clearview AI built this database, which includes billions of photos of people from around the globe, without proper consent.

Going forward, Clearview AI is now banned from use across the Netherlands and faces an addition $5.6 million fine if it does not stop its noncompliant behavior.
