March 2024 Product Update: AI Edition!

This month’s MineOS product feature update will be a little different, because we have some big news to share that’s been a long time coming: the launch of our new AI Asset Discovery feature.

We also have some quality-of-life improvements that are always expected in these monthly updates: in March, we added two new fields to the Data Inventory, to help with data asset organization and filtering, as well as some new integrations. Read on to find out more.

What happened with the EU AI Act?

Regulators across the globe are always playing catch up with rapid tech evolution, presently and particularly in the area of artificial intelligence (AI). One of the most significant milestones in recent regulatory history was the signing of the European Union’s AI Act into law. For businesses with global customers, understanding the foundations and implications of this AI Act is critical.

The Act categorizes AI systems by risk level, imposing a set of requirements on them all, but getting stricter as the types of AI systems increasingly pose threats to privacy, safety, and democratic values. From AI-enabled software and generative AI to custom AIs in use by businesses developing them, this risk-based approach is not just about compliance—it’s about safeguarding the interface between this kind of technology and human rights.

At MineOS we’ve heard from customers who are leading global companies and have even felt ourselves a rising urgency surrounding AI tools. The buzz around AI’s capabilities is loud, but so is the chatter about its potential misuses and the ethical considerations it raises. We are invested in how AI fits into operational frameworks and how it aligns with global standards and regulations, and have big new features in the MineOS platform which step into this arena.

What we want to do with our new AI Asset Discovery feature is simple: to give businesses peace of mind by doing what we do best: Mapping their AI systems and data in order to gain continuous visibility over them, and then assessing and justifying these tools’ usage of data in accordance with new and emerging regulatory frameworks.

Introducing: AI Asset Discovery

The new feature offers both a discovery and assessment feature that is particularly tailored to address the nuanced requirements of the EU AI Act. MineOS provides a granular look at all an enterprise’s AI assets, mapping out where they are used, who uses them and then helping companies assess risks, impacts and data processing through assessments. This dedicated inventory of AI data assets, stakeholders, datasets and assessments will be important as AI's role becomes more central, ensuring that their use of AI remains within the bounds of ethical and regulatory standards.

Discover all the AI-enabled assets your organization uses, including generative AI, datasets, stakeholders and developer tools.

Adding to the robustness of the AI feature, AI assessments enable businesses to create comprehensive records of AI data processing. The assessments feature helps companies identify risks and document other critical details about how data is utilized by AI systems, providing the necessary justification for data use and a deeper understanding of the impacts of AI on their business.

Assess and justify the use or processing of data by your AI tools, in alignment with regulations including the new EU AI Act.

For many companies already familiar with creating Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA) and Records of Processing Activities (RoPA) under GDPR, the approach to most risk levels of AI will feel familiar. MineOS AI assessments adhere to these high standards, and leverage templates as well as custom assessments that help address popular frameworks’ requirements to determine and estimate AI risks and to establish AI controls that properly account for these risks.

Better understand the risks facing your AI tools and get prepared to take action.

Comprehending AI Data Processing is Key to Compliance

As we get further into the AI-augmented era, the need for robust, adaptive governance tools like those offered by MineOS will grow. By integrating such tools into your operational DNA, your business isn’t just complying with the present regulations and frameworks such as the EU AI Act or ISO, but is future-proofing itself.

New Data Inventory Fields

We’ve added two new fields to the data sources in your data inventory - Function (for department) and Review Date, in order to aid in data asset organization. Review Date, for example, makes it easier to filter by Last Updated, which would show the data assets that are most recently completed and also which haven’t been addressed in a while.

March 2024 Integrations

Now included in the automatic data classification feature of MineOS is Jira Service Desk, enabling users to more easily understand what types of data reside in the Jira software. We’ve also expanded DSR automations by integrating Intercom conversations, so that users asking to delete or modify data or privacy involving your use of Intercom can now do so in the conversations it’s had with them as well as in the platform itself.
